What's in the vial
mL

Fill in the vial, the water and your dose to see how much to draw.

U-100 insulin syringe, 1 mL (100 U), filled to 0 U1020304050607080901000 U

How it's worked out

  1. In the vialmg × 1,000 = mcg
  2. Concentrationmcg ÷ mL of water = mcg/mL
  3. Drawdose in mcg ÷ mcg/mL = mL
  4. UnitsmL × 100 = units (U-100)

Dosaly converts the numbers you enter. It doesn't recommend a dose or a product. Check each draw against the marks printed on your syringe.

Questions

How is the number of units worked out?

Three steps. The concentration is the amount in the vial divided by the water you added (5 mg in 2 mL is 2.5 mg, or 2,500 mcg, per mL). The volume to draw is your dose divided by that concentration (250 mcg ÷ 2,500 mcg/mL = 0.1 mL). On a U-100 insulin syringe, 1 mL is 100 units, so 0.1 mL is 10 units. The calculator shows each step with your own numbers.

What does U-100 mean on a syringe?

U-100 syringes are marked so that 100 units fill 1 mL. A 0.3 mL syringe holds 30 units, a 0.5 mL syringe 50 and a 1 mL syringe 100. The calculator also draws the syringe filled to your amount and tells you how close that is to a printed mark.

Does the calculator tell me what dose to take?

No. It only converts the numbers you type: the amount in the vial, the water, and the dose you were given. It never suggests a dose, a compound or a product. Talk to a clinician about what's right for you.

Why can't I enter a dose in IU or in mL?

International units (IU) depend on the specific product, so there's no general way to turn them into milligrams. A dose in mL is already a volume, so there's nothing to convert: on a U-100 syringe, multiply the mL by 100 to get units.

Is anything I type saved?

Not on this page: the numbers stay in your browser. If you sign in, you can save a vial to Dosaly so it keeps track of what's left and reminds you when a dose is due.
