Approved as a medicine in Russia for anxiety, according to a 2026 published review; not approved by the FDA or EMA (as of October 2026).

Research applications

  • Anxiety disorders (small Russian clinical studies)
  • GABA-related genes and enkephalin breakdown (lab and rat studies)
  • Anxiety-like behaviour (rat studies)

What it is

Selank is a lab-made peptide developed in Russia, based on a small immune-system peptide. It has been studied in small Russian trials for anxiety. Large independent trials are lacking.

More detail

Selank is a synthetic seven-amino-acid peptide based on tuftsin, a short peptide from the immune system, with a Pro-Gly-Pro tail added for stability. It was developed in Russia. Laboratory and rat studies have examined its effects on genes linked to GABA signalling, on enzymes that break down enkephalins, and on anxiety-like behaviour. Human evidence consists of a small number of Russian clinical studies in people with generalized anxiety disorder and neurasthenia that compared it with benzodiazepine-type medicines; these were small and published mainly in Russian. Large independent trials have not been reported.
