Approved by the FDA as a prescription medicine (Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes; Zepbound for weight management and obstructive sleep apnea) and by the EMA as Mounjaro.

Research applications

  • Type 2 diabetes (SURPASS trials, including head-to-head with semaglutide)
  • Obesity (SURMOUNT trials)
  • Obstructive sleep apnea (randomized trials)
  • GIP and GLP-1 receptor signalling

What it is

Tirzepatide is a lab-made peptide that acts like two gut hormones, GIP and GLP-1. Large trials studied it in type 2 diabetes and obesity, and it's an approved medicine.

More detail

Tirzepatide is a synthetic 39-amino-acid peptide that activates two gut-hormone receptors: GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1. It carries a fatty-acid chain that binds albumin and extends its action to about a week. Phase 3 trials in the SURPASS program studied it in type 2 diabetes, including a head-to-head trial against semaglutide, and the SURMOUNT trials studied it in obesity; later randomized trials looked at obstructive sleep apnea and other conditions. The most commonly reported side effects in these trials were gastrointestinal.
